this information comes from a visit to the country in april 2002. things might have changed since then. these are my personal impressions and it's well possible that other travellers will not share my views.

accra, ghana: the visa was issued in 24 hours for CFA 10:000 for a 30 day transit visa (according to lonely planet you can pick it up the same day, if you apply in the morning. getting a visa at the border is possible but probably more expensive and you might just be given 24 hours, extendable).

from ghana ho - kpalime: no problems at all. no laissez passer needed

to benin, main coastal road: no problems

places to stay

lome: chez alice, 15 east of lome (the lonely planet map for lome is wrong! follow route de aneho along the seaside, pass two bridges, after that it’s about 10 km GPS: N6*10,089 / E1*20,431). alice is a remarkable lady! rooms with fan cfa 3000 / without fan cfa 2000. great food! (food has a price).
