jordan

this information comes from a visit to the country in august 2004. things might have changed since then. these are my personal impressions and it's well possible that other travellers will not share my views.

visa

cairo, egypt: one month visas are being issued for 135 egyptian pounds. bring one photograph. if you apply in the morning you can pick up your passport between 13:00 - 14:00

ferry from nuweiba to aquabah: you can get a visa on board but i don't know the cost.

getting in and out

form nuweiba (egypt) to aqabah, by ferry: motorbikes are actually illegal in joran; only the police and members of the royal family may drive them. but while it had been a problem to get into jordan at all with a bike in early 2004 things, apparently, have changed. we needed a permission from the police, once in aqabah but this was just a formality. there were no problems getting on the ferry in egypt and everything went smooth in jordan.

insurance for one month cost 7 jordanian dinars, port fees, payable on board were 1 dinar and customs tood 11 dinars.

from amman to damascus: i overstayed the permit for my bike for two days but there were no problems, i simply had to pay the applicable fee (five jordanian dinar, in my case). but it's probably better to extend your permit in advance at the main police station in any large town.
there is an exit tax of five jordanian dinar for each, the driver and the bike. otherwise everything went swift and easy.

places to stay

petra: the valentine hotel in the centre of town is great value: camping on the roof is 1 dinar. there are double rooms for 8 / 15 dinars (with and without shower) and beds in small dorms for 5 / 8 dinars (with and without showers). they serve a great buffet for 3 dinars at night. transport to the entry of old petra is for free.
